In 2020, developers announced a major update for Minecraft: Java Edition. Players will soon be required to transfer their Mojang account into an Microsoft account to continue playing. This is a bit 'early' in terms of relative time, since we're still not quite at the deadline, but the developers have just confirmed the date and sent out the final announcement for account migration. As of March 10, you'll no longer be able play Minecraft: Java Edition with the Mojang account. The developers are encouraging all users to switch to Microsoft accounts for "improved security and player safety" and are entice gamers to switch by offering free Minecraft capes. You can find all information about how to move your account here. Java Edition will be supported as usual following the change and will remain an independent entity from Bedrock. This is only a consolidation of the account system. HATERS GONNA HATE You can keep your old username - all you need is an Xbox gamertag.
